China and Russian central planning will see the US swamped if it isn't careful. Rely solely on the market mechanism will not be enough. The central planning around the space race in the 1960's should be the model. The flow on effects of the innovation surrounding putting a man on the moon where wide reaching and this tech dominance is still felt today. The consequence of falling behind are just too great.
