That IS a huge thing, Brian. I do this all the time when I'm in a group. Not only is it preventing you from approaching people who could be potential business connections for you, it's also keeping them from approaching you! Anyone who doesn't know you well will assume you are already talking to someone and probably hesitate to approach you, even if the person next to you is just a friend who came with for support. It's just like telling people not to have conversations with coworkers when there are customers present. They won't be approachable because it's human nature to not interrupt and to leave people alone in their conversations.
