Chao, to her credit, was one of the most effective opponents of unions in America during her tenure with George W. Bush as his Secretary of Labor. She was also President George H. W. Bush’s Deputy Secretary of Transportation. At every turn, in every position, Chao worked to disrupt the anti-competitive nature of unions.
Her appointment might also dampen the GOP desire for earmarks when they know the Republican Senate leader’s wife can direct funds.
But, visually, this sends a signal that Trump is not as willing to drain the swamp as advertised, but Elaine Chao is really much more of a badass when it comes to fighting the left in the bureaucracy than her husband.
