Sorry folks, but I think putting a group of kids on television after a mass murder at their school is not caring about them. It is using them. Holding these kids up as wise sages who should be listened to because they are useful to your agenda is not caring about them. It is using them. Suggesting we lower the voting age to sixteen because some of these kids want gun control is not caring about them. It is using them. Frankly, I think rounding them for a townhall, no matter how carefully or tastefully done and no matter how much respect is shown them may feel like you are helping them, but I don't think it is. I know you all, across networks and newspapers, mean well in most cases. But I think you need to rethink this.
These kids have been the victims of a terrible, monstrous act. They are right now working hard at being responsible, respectful, and keeping it together as they get trotted out all over the place. You cannot tell me they have really had time to mourn, time to digest what happened, and time to decompress from it all.
Now you all are going to put them in a situation where they can demand public policy changes that you and I both know are not going to happen. We know these changes are not going to happen because they did not happen after Newtown, Sutherland Springs, Las Vegas, or any of the other mass shootings. They did not happen, in part, because of a massive amount of distrust between the political parties. They did not happen, in part, because the politicians could not help themselves and had to preen for their bases and your television cameras. So they will not happen now.
And you all are putting these kids in positions where they can set aside their grief, think they are channeling their anger, and distract them from their nightmares only to see nothing come of this. What then? What happens to them after your satellite trucks are gone, your townhalls are no more, and the news cycle has moved on past them?
This is not caring for these kids even if you think it seems like. This is using them. They've already been used for target practice by a madman and this is target practice by agenda driven politics and journalism. I think you all should reconsider this.
