The Public Christian Embrace of Trump Harms The Christian Witness

This morning, at 9:30 a.m. in Washington, I will be debating the merits of Christians voting for Donald Trump. Details are here.

I learned last night that the National Religious Broadcasters meeting is being broadcast on CSPAN-2. So I suspect you will hear my arguments around 9:40a.m.

I do want to be clear about something, however. I fault no person for going into a voting booth and deciding to vote for Trump against Clinton. I have concluded that both Trump and Clinton are terrible candidates for different reasons and it would be irresponsible of me to vote for either one. As a Republican, I can at least see the arguments for supporting Trump, though I disagree with them. I see no merit in anyone voting for Hillary Clinton other than as jurors to vote for her guilt.

That said, I think public and prominent Christians advocating for Trump is a terrible thing that neither advances the kingdom of God nor helps their witness. If anything, I think Christian advocacy of Trump harms each Christian’s individual witness and harms the church overall.

Today at 9:40 a.m. I will explain my thinking on this. You are welcome to tune in.
