I give Stacey Abrams some credit. The Democrats' gubernatorial nominee in Georgia is very openly and unapologetically liberal. She is convinced that instead of running to the center as a moderate, she should stay on the left side and galvanize progressive voters. It is helping her with fundraising from leftwing interest groups. The problem is that this tactic takes resources away from other states while increasing the odds that she loses in November.
In just the last week, Abrams has again called for the removal of Confederate monuments, something even most Democrats in the state oppose. She is sticking by her plans to tear down Stone Mountain (a very popular confederate monument), or at least add to it. She has gone on record wanting to give illegal aliens state scholarships in the so-called HOPE Scholarship program that is already underfunded. She has attacked police. And she's standing with Linda Sarsour, declaring herself proud to do so.
The Sarsour one is the latest problem. A boy from Georgia has been found dead in New Mexico at what increasingly looks like a terrorist training camp. The boy's father is the son of a radical imam in New York who just so happens to be tied to Sarsour as well. It may be a few degrees of separation from Abrams, but Republicans are amplifying the connections to highlight how radical Abrams is.
Abrams is now also out calling for the end to a state scholarship program that allows minority children into private schools and she's beginning to hint at tax increases to fund her proposals.
She is very honest and that honesty will probably sabotage her. She really believes her proposals will be good for Georgia and has no intention of moderating them. Her conviction is commendable. It also is going to do her in while pulling progressive money into Georgia away from other states.
