If You Do This Mr. President, You’ll Get Nothing

President Trump picked this fight and now he has to win it.

I understand the President’s frustrations with the Congressional Democrats, but the way to win this fight is to go into the districts of freshmen Democrats and point out that they are refusing to compromise at all. The President is willing to negotiate on the amount of money for border security. He’s willing to negotiate on DACA. But all the Democrats are doing is saying no, no, no. The President must make the case in local TV markets around the country. He must note that the prolonged government shutdown is because of Democrats’ refusal to compromise.

If the President declares an emergency and attempts to reprogram money through that declaration or have the military construct the wall, a federal judge is going to stop him. The President will not get the wall and opponents will tie the emergency declaration up so tightly in court the President could go six years in the White House and still not see a penny spent.

On top of that, with an emergency declaration, people in Texas will sue.

But even more than that, the President could probably expect a majority of Democrats in the House and the Democrats in the Senate to pass a joint resolution rejecting the emergency declaration. How’s that? The Senate Majority Leader only gets to block legislation coming to the floor of the Senate by deference to his position. But Schumer could push the issue with just four Republicans.

President Trump will get nothing but a black eye from declaring an emergency and he will not get his wall.

President Trump picked this fight and now he has to win it. He wins it by keeping the government shuttered until Democrats are forced to compromise.

I live in the Northern VA and know several people who are affected by the government shutdown and some who will be if this continues on. But I say keep it shutdown. This is a battle that has to be won. $5.7 billion is a trivial amount of money to the Federal government and most of the things that aren't funded aren't necessary. I wouldn't declare a national emergency merely because it would set a precedent that I wouldn't want to see a future socialist President use for something like climate change. The only people who will really get hurt are private contractors who will not get reimbursed, but all federal employees will get paid for this period of leave just like they all have in the past.

I hate to be cruel about this, but it is about time this area - which boasts 7 out of the 10 richest counties in the US - suffers like the rest of flyover America.

It is true that Trump picked this battle, but his plea for a wall appeals to his base and not much beyond. I won't predict the future but, to me, it's not worth shutting down a government as there is no crisis at the southern border.

Actually, I believe Eric is right on this. The best way to win is to make the Dems so uncomfortable they'll finally give in. We are already seeing cracks in the Dems determination to hold out and there are a lot of new Dem. member who were voted in from red states. Go out to those states and talk about how these new members are denying the American people the safety they deserve. That they aren't willing to compromise and are holding out not because they believe what they're saying but because they want to hurt the President. Just hold the line and we'll get what we want.

I think Trump is winning the messaging war over Pelosi/Schumer.

The wall WILL get challenged in court, and even the SC would strike it down. Trump/Trumpbots have not thought through the next step in their strategy, and like an amateur chess player they only think 1-2 moves ahead........

I'm sorry, Erick, but we have kicked this can down the road since Ronald Reagan was President. Every President since has made un-kept promises to "fix" this issue, but it continues to get worse year after year. The Democrats have strategically changed their views for political expediency for way too long to win elections, but NEVER follow through. In other words, they knowingly lie to the American People. Sadly, they can lie to us, but if we lie to Congress it's a felony.

I understand it's painful, but it MUST be dealt with now. There are 20 to 30 million people here now that crashed the border. We have sat by long enough with typical half-assed fixes from Washington. Build the DAMN WALL, then start on some serious term limits for those that have been misrepresenting us in Congress. After that, repeal the 17th Amendment to give the states their voice back in the Federal Government.

@TraderS, you are funny in your juvenile descriptions of Trump and what he is doing. He has not done anything that does not align with our Constitution, the very document that democrats hate, and he will not. He will do as his attorneys advise him is lawful for him to do. I would love it if the Core of Engineers built the wall and I do not see how a court could possibly tell the President he is not allowed to do the very thing he and all members of congress took an oath to do and the most important job of the Federal Government as outlined by our founding Fathers, DEFEND OUR BORDERS.

If my Facebook feed is any indication, Trump's supporters are itching for him to declare a national emergency. Why? Because they want to see heads explode. Border security isn't the real issue to them; they just want to tick off the libs. How mature.

This idea the Democrats will be forced to do something, because of a shutdown that is 100% just because Trump up and wanted one, is rather silly.

Infact, the exact opposite is true - Democrats are absolutely loving that the stompy-foot "I will shut down the Government unless I get what I want" President is flip-flopping all over the place trying to justify this and threatening to tear up the Constitution in his desperate attempt to save even a tiny bit of face.

All the pressure is currently on Republicans to end Trump's shutdown - that's why some Republicans are already saying it should be ended, others are saying they are open to clean bills to end it, and Trumps bootlickers are encouraging him to piss on the Constitution just so they can reopen the Government without having it look like they went against him on FoxNews

He's not getting the wall either way.

So right now he has himself completely trapped - either he surrenders, he has the Republicans in the Senate surrender and he accepts it by signing the bill, or he tears up the Constitution in an attempt to give an impression he's going to win when he knows full well he actually won't.
