Five of the richest counties in America are in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Loudoun County is the richest and is in Virginia. Falls Church, VA is number two. Fairfax County, Virginia is number three. Arlington County, VA is number eight.
These counties have grown rich and prosperous by their connection to the power of Washington.
Had Republicans kept their biggest promise, i.e to cut the size and scope of the federal government, those counties would not be the affluent zones of rich liberals. Nor would they be the core environs of government bureaucrats, leftwing lobbyists, and political leaders.
The growth of Washington’s power has attracted people to those areas and those areas have, in turn, turned blue. As Washington thrives, so they thrive. Starve the leviathan as the GOP keeps promising to do and suddenly those areas begin to shrink in both wealth and upwardly mobile liberals.
But the GOP will not cut the leviathan. So Northern Virginia will continue to grow and grow more liberal in the process.
