I Am Thankful for Donald Trump

For more reasons that you might expect, I think we should all be thankful for the President. I know I am thankful.

President Trump is not perfect. He was not my choice to be President. But I am thankful for him in many ways.

I appreciate that President Trump has brought about the great sorting of the conservative movement. Though disappointing to see, it has confirmed for me that the nation is not as conservative as I once thought and also that there are a lot of people who have made a lot of money in the conservative movement who do not really believe in the ideals of conservatism.

President Trump has made me recommit to my faith. I could be distracted by politics for the longest time, but seeing the country headed toward the darkness with many so called conservatives cheering on the dark, I have been forced to reprioritize things. I have realized how much of my politics and faith do not align and how many Christian conservatives have worked very hard to conform their faith to their politics instead of the other way around.

I am thankful he put Neil Gorsuch on the bench. I am thankful for many of the President's policies and stellar personnel appointments like Ajit Pai, Justice Willett, Nikki Haley, Rick Perry, General Mattis, etc.

Though it has not happened to the extend I would like, President Trump's election has forced some Democrats to finally realize what conservatives were talking about when they said character counted. It has not been good on the GOP side now, but some Democrats are finally having to recognize it. Likewise, Democrats are starting to realize that defending President Obama's legacy at the expense of reality may not be the greatest thing. It will take further time for this to shake out, but from Iran to Russia to North Korea, at least privately Democrats are starting to acknowledge Barack Obama's failures.

Though not an exhaustive list, there is one last thing I am thankful of because of President Trump. There are people in the old center-right coalition who I may not see eye to eye with at times, but I have a new appreciation for their willingness to stand up. Even now, we do not always agree on things, but it has been nice to see people make it through the great sorting with their integrity intact. I have always has respect and rare disagreement with people like Jonah Goldberg and Bill Kristol, but add into mix with them people like Charlie Sykes and others it is refreshing to see people focus on ideas on the right, not just the cult of personality.

The richest reward in the age of Donald Trump is a clearer vision of the country and a greater appreciation for the necessity of relying on God, not men. This clarifying moment would not have come except for Donald Trump's election and it is clear the turmoil, problems, and opportunism of many were always there festering.

I am so glad to see this article, Erick. I can agree with everything you said, because I recall when you disinvited Trump, during the campaign season. I would have done the same, also. It is interesting how much there has been a change between the campaign season and actual presidential leadership. although Trump is not perfect, and can even stumble to the right conclusion, he is showing, through his actions, how a conservative should guide the country, even while it is still debatable just how conservative he is. I was among those who wanted only to see a President Ted Cruz, so I understand how much of a struggle that can be. The DC punditry crowd, Jonah Goldberg, Bill Kristol and the many others have always been good sources for guidance, but they have often migrated toward the middle and away from conservatism, while claiming to be the great conservative anchors. They should get out more often. Some may be coming around, and I wish to see them quit playing their partisanship withing the party. That should have ended on election day.

Erick, regarding the necessity of relying on God and not men, I think you would appreciate an essay by the great moral and political philosopher Aurel Kolnia: 'The Humanitarian versus the Religious Attitude' (1944) in his book 'Politics, Values, and National Socialism'. Kolnai gets into the inner logic of what he calls 'the self sovereignty of man', which is relevant to your point on the necessity of relying on God. Also, there is a fine an essay by Steve Spires 'Uncovering the Metaphysics of Democracy: Individualism, Pantheism, and Nihilism in the Thought of Alexis de Tocqueville'.

His first year soon up in the white house - a place he himself and I will quote this POTUS, he compared the Prestigious "White House" 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to and I quote!! "...A DUMP..." isn't that correct Mr. POTUS - the republicans called Obama names for almost 4 years and practically were throwing apples and watermelons at him wherever he went, and were viciously calling him names, and I suspect where the derogatory acronym "POTUS" originated from.. so, henceforth, from here on, his name shall be "POTUS". Yes, today is "Thanksgiving Day" - hopefully, this POTUS Drama queen, Limelight Grabbing Bi-polarized Maniac, will leave ONE DAY!! out from his ritual of "HOURLY TWEETS" to bash anything and anyone whom dares stand up to his "GOON SQUAD" of "TROLLS". NEWS FLASH POTUS, a person whom cannot resist the urge to incessantly go online and SPEW HATER "RANTS" about everything from Mexicans, to Muslims, to Women, to Sporting Celebrities whom are expressing their Freedom of Speech in an organized non-violent manner and really, honestly, YOU'RE THE GOD DAMN PRESIDENT OF THESE UNITED STATES, perhaps you should be FLYING BACK TO Puerto Rico, USA - and re-visiting a part of the USA, which had only a few dozen Deaths when you were last there, "they lied to you, Sir!" now the death toll is approaching several thousands, and a beautiful part of the USA which Americans would normally flock to this time of the year, is rapidly decaying into levels resembling "CAMBODIA" during the years of the Vietnam War Conflict! You are a BAD POTUS. You do not deserve to be applauded, you deserve to be IMPEACHED in a Government Military Court-martial.
