Blame Trump if You're Outraged By the Michael Cohen Search Warrant

The President's political appointees signed off on the search warrant. He said he only hires the best.

We have reached peak whataboutism in the United States and tit-for-tat politics. Many Trump supporters have a very legitimate concern that the FBI was lenient on Hillary Clinton while aggressively pursuing Donald Trump. There are lots of allegations out there that FBI agents involved in interviewing Clinton were sympathetic to her against Trump and wanted to help.

Regardless of the merits, however, that does not mean that the FBI should go soft on Donald Trump or Michael Cohen. The perception of unfairness is something the Trump Department of Justice needs to consider, but that does not mean the FBI should not fully investigate allegations of wrong doing.

It is possible Hillary Clinton did something wrong and also possible Donald Trump did something wrong. It is possible neither did. But regardless, there are serious allegations that should be looked into. I get the GOP need to try to discredit the investigation to protect their precious and I also get the perception of unfairness. But the FBI is a deeply professional organization as a whole and it is currently being overseen by people directly appointed by Donald Trump to their positions.

If Donald Trump's political appointees at the Department of Justice are unable to steer this ship, that's on Trump. He appointed them and said he only hired the best people. A subpoena of Trump's lawyer would have gone through career professionals at the DOJ and then been approved by Trump appointees in the DOJ.

One of the damning partisan indictments of the Obama era is that his political appointees were ruthless in ignoring the rule of law to protect his administration. Whether true or fair, the fact is President Trump now staffs the senior level of the DOJ that approves these things. They are either not ruthless in ignoring the rule of law, which is a good thing, or they are staggeringly incompetent, which is a damning indictment on the man who appointed them.

I think case, if Republicans will allow themselves to get over their sense of grievance after eight years of Obama, reality should settle in. That reality is that Donald Trump's partisan appointees in the Department of Justice approved a search warrant organized by careerists in the Department of Justice on behalf of Trump's chosen US Attorney in New York because they have a reasonable suspicion that Michael Cohen has been up to no good.

If you don't like that it happened, blame Trump. He picked the people who signed off on all this and he says he only hires the best. And if you don't like that Hillary appears to have gotten off for a crime for which you think she should have been locked up, well that's on Trump too. He's the freaking Chief Executive of the United State of America and the Attorney General was his choice and has remained in that position through all this.

This is a lame column that is deflecting. There is serious concern with an unaccountable special prosecutor going on fishing expeditions that are using dubious premises that undermine legal protections. If our top federal investigators were men and women of integrity, it might be less of a concern, but the illegal activity of Andrew McCabe and his 'lack of candor', the illegal leaks by Sally Yates, Comey's leaking that also deserve a dress-down and not celebration, all point to top echelon of federal govt that has been hopelessly compromised. Susan Rice abused top secret intel via 'unmasking' to inform on targets in Trump's circle; that was spying on Trump's campaign, completely wrong and should never have happened. We are assured no 'abuses' will occur now that investigators have confidential information that could violate client-attorney privilege - what good are those assurances in the way of prior abuses multiple times? The raid on Cohen's office smells of the same 'pressure tactics' like going after Flynn, charged for lying (when he actually didnt lie) over something that was not even illegal. There is no 'there' there on the original 'collusion' smear, and we are stuck with an out-of-control investigation looking for dirt, any dirt, to nail Trump with. It's disgraceful prosecutorial abuse if it was done against a private citizen, why should ANYONE consider it okay if it's done against a President, even if you don't approve of him? Trump's political enemies are letting their political biases cloud their judgment, bigly.

Did you read the piece above! Erik Erikson is no Trumpster! Some of us still have character and morals something Trump sorely lacks!

My problem with the investigation into Cohen is that Hillary, having been shown to have committed crimes, should have been indicted and prosecuted before any of this garbage that may or may not be true, is exactly wrong. When you have a mess involving all the conflicts of interest with everyone on the Special Counsel performing an illegal act, according to the statute they are supposedly charged for, it is nothing but a politically biased and charged witch hunt, by definition. Putting any love or hate about Trump aside, we should be forcing these people to be following the Constitution, instead of using regulatory loopholes to go after a political opposite. Until it gets back to that point, I am opposed to anything they try to connect any dot to Trump, and I will remain adamantly opposed to anything Mueller's team of political lackys do. Everything that is going on, right now, is wrong.

I love the confidence. You KNOW it to be true. I guess you have inside information. Let's be clear ... you WANT it to be true. You're a hater. No open-mindedness or middle of the road point of view for you. He's the WORST ... until we elect another Republican president. Look, I get you don't like the guy and that he doesn't align with your politics, but it's amazing the vitriol that all of our leaders get from people that don't align with their ideologies. Obama is perfect and Trump is the devil and there is no middle ground. I get it. I'm sure you will be thrilled when the democrats impeach Trump, our democracy lies in shambles and Mike Pence becomes our President. I am sure you will be more fair and balanced them. Nice balanced dialogue.
