These folks read glowing profiles of the famous-for-being-famous former First Daughter and expect her to have something to say.
Cut to this month’s cover article in Variety – because when I think of the entertainment industry, I think of Chelsea Clinton, don’t you? This article has more softballs than an Academy Sport warehouse. The interviewer, Ramin Setoodeh, goes on and on about Chelsea’s “mission,” her “responsibilities,” her “message,” and her “empowerment.” Clinton goes on about how she met with television writers to talk them into writing characters who sing to children (you read that right). But you won’t find a tough question in the bunch.
Only one of them has to do with entertainment – a dumb question about whether she likes action movies. But one question in particular, which Setoodeh sets up like an expert softball pitcher, allows Chelsea to hit a left wing home run.
As part of the discussion on Clinton’s time on the campaign trail, stumping for her mom, the interviewer asks Chelsea if she was surprised at the sexism in America in 2017. It’s apropos of nothing, but Chelsea takes the bait anyway and throws everyone who didn’t vote for Hillary under the bus:
I’m not surprised. I’m deeply saddened. I think it’s important for us to realize we can’t take progress for granted. Progress has to be continually defended as well as advanced. I think about this multiple times a day. It’s 2017, and we’re fighting again on fights that were settled a few years ago around gay rights, women’s reproductive health; fights to ensure we’re a country that’s always moving toward a more perfect union and not moving toward disunion, disunity, and segregation. We’re really in peril of moving backward. That’s not what I want for my children and their generation.
Oh, ok. We’re sexists for not voting for Hillary. We’re the dividers, as opposed to the party who has spent at least the last eight years splitting Americans into groups and pitting them against each other – most notably painting everyone who refuses to fall in lockstep with them as bigots.
It continues to amaze me that the Left refuses to engage in self-examination after Hillary’s loss. If it’s not the Russians, it’s a nation plagued by sexism. There’s never any discussion of the message the Democrats foist on this country, and there’s certainly no rumination on how terrible a candidate Hillary Clinton was.
I did find one statement of value in the Variety piece, and that’s the reassurance that Chelsea Clinton will not run for office. We can all sleep a little better knowing that fact.
