He handled IT support for four Members of Congress, including Wasserman Schultz, Texas Democrat Rep. Joaquin Castro, who served on the intelligence and foreign affairs panels and Rep. Cedric Richmond, who served on the Committee on Homeland Security.
He had access to highly classified data and congressional networks and email accounts, even though he would have failed to gain even a Secret clearance if he were a DoD contractor due to his prior criminal record and 2012 bankruptcy.
Imran Awan also worked for the Democratic National Committee and has been tied to the 2016 Wikileaks email hack. On Feb. 2, the House Sergeant-at-Arms had Awan and his brothers Abid and Jamal banned from the House of Representatives computer network–a very unusual and extreme step.
Now we’ve learned that Imran Awan had passwords and complete access to Wasserman Schultz’s iPad at the time of the DNC email hack. FBI Director James Comey said the DNC did not cooperate with the agency’s investigation, according to The Hill.
And although other Democrats in Congress have fired the Awans, Wasserman Schultz has retained Imran as an “adviser.” Why is she protecting the lead suspect in a criminal probe?
Politico reported that New York Rep. Gregory “Meeks and, to a larger extent, Wasserman Schultz, are said to have a friendly personal relationship with Awan and his wife, according to multiple sources.”
House authorities set their sights on the Awans while investigating the existence of a secret server that was funneling congressional data off-site.
They also suspect Imran of stealing money and equipment. Soon after he joined Wasserman Schultz’s congressional payroll in 2005, four of his relatives and one of his friends began getting paid by House members. It is not clear whether ghost employees are part of the theft being investigated, but the family collected a combined $5 million.
This is serious stuff. The Awans are bad news. They have links to a Hizbollah-related fugitive, who loaned their side business $100,000 (that was never repaid).
The Awans, all Muslims of Pakistani descent, have been accused of extortion against their own stepmother, and threats to murder family in Pakistan if she didn’t allow them access to their father’s money (reportedly stashed in Pakistan). She reported them to the Fairfax County police before they were named as suspects in the hacking investigation.
Over the last six years, the individuals in question worked for some 80 members of Congress, all Democrats, including members of the Homeland Security, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence committees. They worked for multiple members at once, since the offices did not require full-time IT services.
The amount of classified, damaging, and critical data the Awans could have compromised is beyond estimating. This scandal very well could turn out worse than Snowden and Manning put together.
Yet Wasserman Schultz, reportedly a personal friend of Imran and his wife, continues to protect him. Why?
No answers have been forthcoming from Wasserman Schultz, her DNC replacement Donna Brazile, current DNC Chairman Tom Perez or his deputy Democrat Rep. Keith Ellison. There’s far more smoke here than a all the Russian connections to Trump and his associates, and this is far more likely to lead to a burning fire.
Of course, the main stream media isn’t reporting any of it. That in itself should tell you there’s more here than meets the eye.
