One of the requirements of being a member of the House of Representatives is being able to get to the Capitol to do your job when your term begins. That's in Washington D.C. not Queens. According to a New York Times Article, this could be an obstacle for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
Raised solidly upper middle class in Westchester County and having a college degree in economics and international relations from Boston University, she somehow ended up pouring drinks at a watering hole in the Bronx and volunteered for Bernie Sanders 2016 campaign. After the election, she traveled across America by car, visiting places such as Flint, Michigan, and Standing Rock. Specifically she joined activities around the Flint water crisis and the Dakota Access Pipeline.Seems that could take a bit of cash, doesn't it?
But I digress. The working class girl from the Bronx (by choice) may be living in her car until her congressional salary kicks in. If she has a car....AND THIS IS SOCIETY'S FAULT YOU HEARTLESS ELITES!
In the saccharine and adoring New York Times profile after her all but assured election, Ocasio Cortez seems convinced that her win signals some kind of far Left Progressive mandate nationwide. It's kind of adorable since far Left candidates didn't do so well outside of deep blue urban districts like hers.
In fact, many of her fellow Democratic Freshmen members are pretty moderate. Dangerously close to Blue-Dog Democrats. And likely able to afford a roof over their head in their new work location. It was probably even a consideration before they ran for office. Not so with the new Democrat darling. Who also says she may work to primary incumbent Democrats. You really can't make this up.
From the interview:
> Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said the transition period will be “very unusual, because I can’t really take a salary. I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real.”
According to her tweet, you shouldn't worry though. Her team is working it out. Just remember it will be worked out on you dime.
