The largest market share of online news source isn't what you think

Reddit is now commanding a larger share of online news sources, passing Twitter and Facebook.

When you think of the most popular online news platform, what comes to mind? I think for most of us, we would probably guess one of the major news sites or a social media site such as Facebook or Twitter. However, a new study from the Pew Research Center indicates that another social media site has overtaken the lead in this category: Reddit.

Reddit has branded itself as the front page of the Internet and is an open forum concept. Anyone can join, anyone can post, and it is now capturing a larger percentage of people as a news source than other big name social media sites.

Surprisingly, Reddit is identified as having the second most educated audience behind LinkedIn. Even with all this good news, Facebook’s sheer user numbers mean that more people actually get their news from Facebook as Reddit has a larger market share.

Reddit is also the last major platform that permits a semblance of free speech online..

Link to the original Pew data:

There were two interesting things for me. First different education levels get their information from different sources. Educated, Reddit & LinkedIn. While the HS only group was youtube, facebook, Instagram, and snapchat.

There was also a large gender gap based on source.

To be completely honest, Reddit is where you find knowledgeable people discussing esoteric and breaking news, without trolling. You can guess, and be proved wrong, and no one holds your guess against you.
