I love JD Vance. His book "Hillbilly Elegy" has had more effect on my life than any other book except maybe the bible. If I'm ever fortunate enough to meet him I'm going to demand a DNA sample because I swear we must be related! But maybe that's what made his book so great: everyone reading it could relate to his tale of family dysfunction and inspiration. "Elegy" was the go to book in 2016 for explaining the Trump phenomenon (even though it was written before Trump's success in the primary.) It spoke to the flaws and advantages of life in rural America, and specifically in the Appalachian region of the country.
Vance has been a contributor to CNN for the last year. Ron Howard is set to direct the movie version of his book. But instead of going Hollywood, Vance moved back to his hometown last year to start a non-profit that would battle the opioid epidemic.
He's been approached to run for office before and decided against it. But last week Ohio state treasurer Josh Mandel announced he is withdrawing from the Senate race due to his wife's health problem. This has left a huge void in a primary Mandel was heavily favored to win. There are only 4 months to go before the election. So, it's not surprising that Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has reportedly reached out to Vance to run.
I hope he considers it. JD Vance is exactly the kind of representative we need. A man who knows the crushing effects of poverty and substance abuse as well as the value of family. An Ohio native who served in the marines and graduated Ohio State AND Yale law school.
So, run JD Vance! Your state needs you. The Republican party needs you. America certainly needs you.
