The news comes right after a dismal showing of donations for April. The DNC raised $4.7 million that month – their worst April showing since 2009.
Newly-elected DNC Chairman Tom Perez has had to explain away the embarrassing numbers to the media. He contends he’s only been on the job since March 1, and needs more time to turn things around. In an interview with NBC’s Hallie Jackson, Perez refused to accept responsibility.
As you can see from the clip, Perez has the ambitious goal of doubling the DNC budget from $50 million to $100 million. With fundraising numbers like these, however, this wouldn’t be just an uphill struggle – it’d be more like mission impossible.
On contrast, the Republican National Committee is reporting robust fundraising numbers. They took in $10.8 million for the month of May. This is an off-year record high for the RNC. Party Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel (unlike Perez) is more than happy to talk about her organization’s fundraising prowess.
“Thanks to the continued investment by Americans who truly believe conservative values will continue to change this country for the better, the RNC will be there to support, defend, and elect Republicans headed into 2018 and beyond,” she said in a statement.
