A famous trope in mob movies happens when a wiseguy is about to get whacked by a trusted friend, who says to him right before pulling the trigger, “I just want you to know, it’s not personal. It’s just business.” Well, apparently CNN anchor Jim Sciutto—who used to work for Barack Obama’s State Department before trading it all in for the life of a TV news huckster—must’ve seen Goodfellas one too many times, because when it came to Democrats and the media smearing Brett Kavanaugh as a gang rapist, all he could do was shrug and say that’s just politics in DC these days.
News flash, Jim—that wasn’t politics as usual, at least not until the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee made it that way. And it wouldn’t be politics as usual if you and the rest of the national news media hadn’t dumped what little credibility you still had left by abandoning any pretense of journalistic integrity in pushing this story.
That’s why confirming Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court Is so vital. It would send a clear message to both the Democrats and the media that no matter how hard they try, no matter how low they go, the country will not stand for character assassination in the pursuit of nakedly partisan ends. And maybe, just maybe, when the dust settles after this whole sordid affair, trying to destroy a good man’s life won’t get brushed off as just the cost of doing business in Washington.
Because it is personal, the media’s mob mentality notwithstanding.
