Scalise was shot with a 7.62mm round from an SKS rifle. It’s heavy and highly energetic rifle ammunition designed to kill with one shot. He was shot in the hip. Scalise is very fortunate to be alive.
I’ve had the experience of dealing with a gunshot victim (a very close friend), who was shot through the back and out the chest with a .45-caliber pistol. The survival rate for each of his injuries was 1 percent–and he had four of those injuries. He spent 40 days in the ICU, but he eventually recovered fully–a miracle.
My friend was 22 when he was shot. Scalise is 51.
Pray for Scalise and his family. There is a very long recovery ahead and by no means is he out of the woods.
But this is very good news.
