After initially signalling this morning he would support Judge Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, Senator issued a qualifier for his support during the committee hearing this afternoon. Flake called for a limited delay of no more than one week to allow the FBI to conduct an investigation into Christine Ford's allegations against Judge Kavanaugh.
"Making sure that we do due diligence here, and I think it would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week, in order to let the FBI..do an investigation limited time and in scope to the current allegations that are there...I will vote to advance the bill (Kavanaugh's nomination) to the floor with that understanding"
Democrats have been working overtime to delay the vote and ensure Kavanaugh could not be seated in time for the next session, which begins Monday. It's unclear whether Kavanaugh would've been confirmed in time, but a week break would certainly ensure that SCOTUS enters the next session with only 8 justices. Now we will see how Mitch McConnell handles the final vote.
