Breaking: Darrell Issa To Retire

Issa would have faced a tough reelection fight.

Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is retiring from Congress per a report from OC Daily. The local news site reported that Issa will not seek reelection this year.

Issa has served in Congress since 2001 representing the 49th district near San Diego. He served as chairman of the House Oversight Committee from 2011 through 2015.

If the report is confirmed, Issa will join an increasing number of House Republicans who are calling it quits this year. At least 23 House Republicans have announced that they do not plan to return to Congress next term. The wave of retirements may aid Democrats in their bid to win control of the body.

The thing a lot of people are missing is that house chair positions are term limited. Many of the people retiring are at the end of their term for their committee. I imagine someone like Issa would rather move onto a different job rather than go back to congress without his chairmanship.
