Six of those seven had previously supported the identical bill back in 2015 when they knew Obama would veto it. They all ran on repeal, but when the chance came to actually deliver on that promise, they broke their word.
Senators voted 45-55 on the measure, with seven Republicans and all Democrats voting no. The Republicans voting no were Sens. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, Susan Collins of Maine, Dick Heller of Nevada, John McCain of Arizona, Rob Portman of Ohio, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Only Collins voted against the measure in 2015.
This “clean repeal” wasn’t even a total repeal of Obamacare. It would have gotten rid of most Obamacare taxes and mandates but left the insurer regulations intact. But it was the most conservative option that the Senate has considered.
This failure follows the downfall of the BCRA “repeal and replace” bill Tuesday.
The only option left is a so-called “skinny repeal” bill, which only eliminates the individual and employer mandate and medical device tax. Truly, Repeal-In-Name-Only. A RINO for RINO’s. Its purported purpose is just to get the Senate to a Conference Committee with the House and hash out a new healthcare bill. But in light of the latest broken promise, it looks like just kicking the can down the road again.
