Book-Banning Atheists are the New Fundamentalists

The FFRF's fearful outrage of Scripture is so potent, it is actually a greater threat to intellectualism than the Bible.

The militant evangelistic atheists from Wisconsin known as the “Freedom From Religion Foundation” are celebrating the defeat of a bill in the Iowa legislature (HB 2031) that would have directed the state’s department of education to prepare material and teacher training for courses on the historical and literary significance of the Bible in Western civilization.

I’ve written before why these classes are necessary. If a student graduates from high school without an understanding of basic addition and subtraction, we say the school has failed. Why? Because those are the foundation of understanding mathematics.

If a student graduates from high school without an understanding of basic grammar and spelling, we say the school has failed. Why? Because those are the foundation of understanding the language necessary to function in society.

If a student graduates from high school without an understanding of mitosis and photosynthesis, we say the school has failed. Why? Because those are the foundation of understanding the natural world.

And if a student graduates from high school without an understanding of the Bible, we should say the school has failed. Why? Because it is the foundation of understanding Western Civilization.

There’s no questioning that the backbone of law in Western Civilization, embodied most notably in the work of Sir William Blackstone, was predicated upon the Moral Law of God articulated in Scripture. There’s no avoiding the reality that the history of Western art, music, literature, language and culture is flush with biblical references and overtones.

After all, what text does Shakespeare reference no less than 1,200 times in his plays? What text offered the pretext for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail?” What text has welcomed the hand of almost every American president taking his oath of office?

Though it is hardly uncommon or out of character for the lawsuit-happy radicals at FFRF, their panicked outrage and manifest fear of the Bible is so potent they are far more a threat to intellectualism than they are Christianity. Their Bible banning obsession is every bit as aggressive and hysterical as the Huckleberry Finn torching reactionaries of years ago.

One fundamentalism gives way to another.

One last note, this was not a required class... Just an offering, but we can't have that!

I'm just tired of explaining to 24 year old post-college adults that there was a region in the Roman Empire called Judea, people from it were called Judes and one of these Judes was executed for what Rome interpreted to be an insurrection and they joking called him King of the Jews, he wasn't a literal king with land, titles & wealth. Weather you believe he rose from the grave 3 days later is on you, but Saint Peter believed it so much he requested to be crucified upside down in 63 AD and the "Cross of Saint Peter" (along with keys) became an official emblem of the Catholic Church and yet SOMEHOW two thousand-ish years later, the upside down cross is an anti-Christian symbol. How the heck did that happen!? Because the Bible isn't taught in high school so now I have to become a teacher and Biblesplain this to grown adults.

If the FFRF were consistent in their application of their avowed principles I might allow that they had principles. The short version is that their only objection is to Christianity so that invalidates all their objections large or small. Where's their objection to Islam or other religions? It's not there. There bluff needs to be called. this business of sending a letter threatening a law suit and governments surrendering is tyranny is tyranny whether it's one, a majority or the minority.

Their bluff not There bluff

True American History and Western Civilization cannot be taught or understood without including the influence the Bible and Christianity had in shaping America and civilization of the western world. Unfortunately these things have been eliminated from our public education system so the current teachers have not been taught and would perhaps not be qualified to teach it! What or who is FFRF? From reading about them I get the feeling they are a bunch of bored teen's.
