I have a confession to make. I used to be a Democrat. I was raised in the south by die-hard Carter supporters. I graduated from Smith College. I voted for Bill Clinton. TWICE. Really, it's a miracle that I was successfully deprogrammed.
So, what happened? What could turn a liberal feminist into the gun owning Republican that I am now? Well, it all started with Bill Clinton. Or more accurately, it all started with Monica Lewinsky.
As I admitted earlier I voted for Bill Clinton. I LOVED Bill Clinton. I DEFENDED Bill Clinton when the Lewinsky story first broke because "the president of the United States wouldn't DO THAT." The betrayal hurt. It hurt BAD. But what really did me in was having to explain to my 85 year old mother what oral sex was and that is a conversation that NOBODY SHOULD BE FORCED TO HAVE!
And I just couldn't understand the women rushing to defend him. Gloria Steinem of all people. The feminists who thought Anita Hill was a prophetess suddenly rushed to defend a man who had betrayed his wife and ruined a young woman's life - all because he was keeping abortion legal and hey, that was what counted. The most insulting was the declaration by Nina Burleigh that “I would be happy to give him a blowjob just to thank him for keeping abortion legal. I think American women should be lining up with their Presidential kneepads on to show their gratitude for keeping the theocracy off our backs." Eeeew. I guess we really hadn't come a long way, baby.
It's only taken 20 years, but the tide seems to finally be turning against Clinton. Maybe it's part of the effort by Democrats to finally shovel the dirt over Hillary's campaign. Maybe the hypocrisy of believing Trump's and Roy Moore's accusers while continuing to deny Juanita Broaddrick has finally hit them. In the last week, The Atlantic has published a story on it. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/11/reckoning-with-bill-clintons-sex-crimes/545729/. Even the New York Times published a column by Michelle Goldberg stating that she finally believes the accusations. We'll just have to see just how many liberals finally climb on this bandwagon.
I walked away from the Democratic party 20 years ago because liberals decided legal abortion was more important than their dignity. And I'm prepared to leave the Republican party if they're willing to put a pedophile in the Senate to fight it.
