Shane Black portrayed Hawkins, one of Dutch’s (Arnold Schwarzenegger) teammates, in the original Predator (1987). Thirty-one years later he is behind the camera and directing a new (non-reboot) Predator. 20th Century Fox has just delivered fans the first look at the film.
Boyd Holbrook (Logan) stars in the new movie, and he gets a lot of face time in the trailer. But we get several good looks at Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse) too. The preview keeps the plot mostly under wraps, revealing little more than what anyone familiar with the Predator franchise already knows.
The synopsis on the 20th Century Fox YouTube page provides a few more details, noting in part that “the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species.”
It’ll be interesting to see exactly how this plays out on screen. Will audiences see something quite similar to what they saw in the original movie and its sequels? If they do, then you can’t help but wonder if this will become another entry that is quickly forgotten. (I don’t even remember offhand how many sequels have been produced. Predator 2 and Alien vs. Predator are the only titles I can specifically recall.)
But if Black truly delivers something unique, he has a chance of reinvigorating the series.
In addition to Holbrook and Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski star.
Predator premiers in theaters on Sep. 14.
