According to New York Daily News, Republican Roy Moore reportedly began dating his wife before she was officially divorced from her first husband.
Kayla Moore separated from then-husband John Charles Heald just two weeks before she encountered Moore for the first time.
She filed for divorce on Dec. 28, which was finalized roughly in April 1985, the Washington Examiner found.
Those divorce records would indicate that Moore struck up a relationship with her prior to the official end of her marriage.
“I was determined to get to know her, but Kayla, divorced and with a beautiful little girl, Heather, who was nearly a year old, was not interested in a relationship with anyone,” he wrote in his 2005 memoir, “So Help Me God.”
Moore, in his book, said they started dating early on in 1985 after she went to his colleague’s office. They’d dated “about a year” when they became engaged in mid-December 1985.
Moore's campaign spokesman denied the assertion:
“Regardless of when they met, Judge and Kayla did not date while she was still with her ex-husband or legally married,” Brett Doster, Moore’s campaign spokesman, told the newspaper via email.
This latest revelation might be inconsequential if it were not for Moore having long sold himself as a religious, morally-sound man. At a campaign rally on Tuesday , he said to his supporters:
“We’ve got to go back to God,” Moore said, not long before reminding voters he was kicked off the state Supreme Court for refusing to obey federal court orders. “We’ve got to go back and restore the morality of this country.”
