President Donald Trump's meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel this past spring made headlines for what appeared to be a handshake snub on the part of Trump.
But a recent New York Times piece recalls a more embarrassing incident from that March meeting: Trump's failure to grasp U.S.-E.U trade relations.
“Ten times Trump asked [Ms Merkel] if he could negotiate a trade deal with Germany. Every time she replied, 'You can’t do a trade deal with Germany, only the EU,'" the official told The Times.
"On the eleventh refusal, Trump finally got the message, 'Oh, we’ll do a deal with Europe then.'"
Afterward, German officials expressed relief among themselves that Ms. Merkel had managed to get through the exchange without embarrassing the president or appearing to lecture him. Some White House officials, however, said they found the episode humiliating.
