IN MULTIPLE STATES, GOP LAWMAKERS AIMED TO REDUCE LIABILITY FOR DRIVERS WHO RAMMED PROTESTERS

The ramming attack that occurred today may have been met with reduced liability had the State of Virginia passed a law limiting the penalties for such behavior as other States have attempted to do.

Sean McElwee, from the policy center Demos, tweeted the following states who have attempted to decriminalize car ramming.

Tennessee’s NBC WSMV reported on the Tennessee version of this law:

“State Rep. Matthew Hill, R-Jonesborough, wants to stop protesters taking to the streets of Tennessee.

He has filed a bill that says if a driver hits a protester who is blocking traffic in a public right-of-way, then that driver would be immune to civic liability if the demonstrator is hit and hurt, as long as it wasn’t intentional.

“If you want to protest, fine, I am for peaceful protesting, not lawless rioters,” Hill said. “We don’t want anyone to be hurt, but people should not knowingly put themselves in harm’s way when you’ve got moms and dads trying to get their kids to school.”
