Indian Country Today, Native America’s premier news source, expands to Maven

Esteemed publication cements its comeback on stable new platform

SEATTLE — The foremost voice in Native America, Indian Country Today, has moved to digital media coalition Maven (ticker symbol MVEN).

“Maven is the ideal platform for our mobile approach and it opens new advertising possibilities not available to us before,” says Indian Country Today editor Mark Trahant, a one-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for reporting and author of four books on Native American history.

“What I really like is my colleagues and I can spend our time doing great journalism instead of worrying about SEO or coding, or so many of the other back shop functions. With Maven, we spend our time telling stories,” he added.

Founded in 1981 as weekly print newspaper Lakota Times, Indian Country Today features original reporting for and about Native American people in the United States, First Nations people of Canada, and indigenous people worldwide.

Serving the sovereign indigenous nations and celebrating their people, the Washington, D.C.-based channel is considered the authority on Native American news, history, activism, culture, events, entertainment, education, sports, recipes, travel and more, with close to 1.5 million social media followers.

“Indian Country Today is a storied and award-winning member of the independent publishing world,” says Maven CEO James Heckman. “For more thanthree decades, Indian Country earned countless awards for excellence in journalism but, like many in the industry, struggled in the digital era. Mark Trahant has been leading an impressive return to prosperity and we’re proud Maven is going to be a partner in that continued success and stability.”

Maven is a coalition of mavensoperating on a shared digital publishing, advertising and distribution platform, unified under a single media brand. Based in Seattle, Maven is publicly traded under the ticker symbol MVEN.
