Face of Defiance began as a global photographic project dedicated to spreading awareness of the brutal reality that is female genital mutilation. Face of Defiance consists of portraits of women who are victims of gender violence and genital mutilation. Face of Defiance will bring its photos and firsthand experiences to Maven in 2017.
The project was founded by Leyla Hussein in collaboration with photographer Jason Ashwood. Born in Somalia, Hussein is a victim of female genital mutilation and her experience inspired her to dedicate her life to ending the practice worldwide. She is a practicing psychotherapist and social activist who specializes in women’s and reproductive rights. In 2013, she was named one of the BBC 100 Women of the Year.
