Musical Tribute to Bribes in the US, Israel, Nigeria, Everywhere

Israeli PM Netanyahu and Shell executives face bribery charges. US politicians are second to none when selling votes.

Bribes Israeli Style

Israeli police are urging the attorney general to indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in two corruption cases involving bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

The recommendation is the result of more than a year of investigations into allegations that Netanyahu improperly accepted expensive gifts including pink champagne and cigars from Israeli Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer in exchange for favors.

Netanyahu appeared on TV denying the charges. It came across as follows: I took bribes and smoked cigars for the good of the nation.

Bribes Nigerian and Italian Style

A top oil executive walked into the marble lobby of an exclusive Milan hotel on a chilly winter night. His dinner date was a former Nigerian oil minister offering to sell one of Africa’s biggest untapped oil discoveries.

Eight years later, the question of whether the $1.3 billion paid for the license to that prized oil field was mostly a bribe is at the heart of one of the biggest bribery scandals the oil industry has ever seen.

Part of a broader crackdown, the case has reached into the highest levels of the executive ranks of Royal Dutch Shell, the second-largest Western oil company—including wiretaps on its chief executive—and into Eni, Italy’s state-backed oil company.

Bribes US Style

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is in prison after being found guilty of 17 charges including wire fraud, attempted extortion, and conspiracy to solicit bribes.

In the US, politicians have to be pretty damn stupid to get convicted of bribery. Blagojevich represents the cream of the crop.

The case involved sweeping pay to play and influence peddling allegations, including the alleged solicitation of personal benefit in exchange for an appointment to the United States Senate as a replacement for Barack Obama, who had resigned after being elected President of the United States.

Simply put, Blagojevich tried to put a US Senate seat up for sale.

Campaign Donations

Most bribes go unnoticed. It's just a part of the campaign contribution game. West Virginia provides a nice example.

Musical Tribute

Bribe, bribe, everywhere a bribe
Dolin’ out the money sure feels fine
Do this, don't do that, won’t you take my bribe?
Now, hey you, missie, can't you see?
You've got to pay a bribe to give a speech
You can't watch, no you can't speak
You ain't supposed to be here
The bribes say you gotta fork over big bucks to make a deal
Bribe, bribe, everywhere a bribe
Dolin’ out the money sure feels fine
Do this, don't do that, won’t you take my bribe?

Elected office holders will resign/retire (John Boehner, Tom Daschle, Trent Lott, etc.) from their seats of power in order to become even more influential, ...as lobbyists. It is akin to bribery and lobby firms are where lots of legislation is drawn up. The sponsors in Congress have only rudimentary knowledge of the bills they are sponsoring and sometimes need only to “pass them in order to find out what is in them”.

How many examples do we need to show us that the political system is little more than a 'legalized' criminal organization of, by, and for the financial/corporate/industrial oligarchs. It is naivety at its best to believe that 'representative' democracy does little more than represent the wealthy and influential power brokers in this world.

Along with the bribery that will always be with us, is the pervasiveness of "conflict of interest" that is now everywhere in business and government. You'd think the baby boomers who own the world these days would recognize this legal concept is out of control. When the Federal government comes out with its economic numbers, the BLS or DOCommerce or whoever compiles the stats are ultimately supervised by the same political appointees whose masters will benefit when massaged numbers are released. Lower inflation and lower unemployment stats means happier feelings and more votes. In the last 20-30 years, this "you can trust the amazing "us"" thing has gone crazy, resulting in more and more sleazy activity. If you could benefit, you shouldnt be anywhere near what you are regulating.

Are there other accepted business practices in Nigeria other than bribery?

"Blagojevich represents the cream of the crop.
The case involved sweeping pay to play and influence peddling allegations..." Blagojevich is probably upset that he was convicted, while Hillary got away with it.

Blame the victim. Just like the rest of the Mockingbird media. Don't those same oil companies work extremely hard to improve and reduce the price by a penny a gallon at the refinery level? Every tweak done by engineering ethics - every extra drop an answer to - right or wrong? Then their supply is choked off at the source by gunmen and murderers ... errrr ... gummints - in DC, London, Bruxxels, Tokyo, "honorable" men in "capitols" the world over. What are they supposed to do, hire their own armies? Atlas Shrugged? There is only OneLaw, the rest are written whim.

Basically crooks run the show everywhere. Think of it -- crooks run law and order, crooks raise taxes, crooks pay themselves salary with our tax money, crooks disburse our tax money as they please -- e.g. bail out banksters and salary to central banksters, now about to be bailed out again Frannie Mae without a by your leave (https://www.marketwatch.com/story/fannie-mae-to-turn-to-taxpayers-after-65-billion-loss-2018-02-14).

These crooks will run amok till a revolution comes along.

“Basically crooks run the show everywhere.”

Not “Basically”. “Inevitably.” The mere act of “running the show” of other people’s lives, is crookedness by definition.

I don’t understand why Blagojevich went to jail? Aren’t all the US Senate seats for sale?

When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first thing to be brought and sold are the legislators. PJ O'Rourke.
