Moya-Smith began as a contributor to ICMN in November of 2011 after his student blog on the National Football League’s Washington football team and mascots was discovered. He has covered controversial topics such as Elizabeth Warren, Columbus, the Bering Strait, as well as mascots. Moya-Smith continues to address the issue of Native Americans disproportionately killed at the hands of police more than any other race without the attention by mainstream media. In 2016, Moya-Smith spent multiple weeks in Standing Rock while water protectors continued their fight against Energy Transfer Partners and its Dakota Access Pipeline that was being built near the Standing Rock Reservation.
