Luger (Anishinaabe and Hunkpapa/Miniconjou Lakota) was raised in Grand Forks, Belcourt, and Fort Yates, North Dakota; an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa on her mother’s side, and a descendant of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe on her father’s side. In 2010, Chelsey Luger graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Native American Studies and History, where she designed a unique course of study focusing on comparative histories of Indigenous Peoples globally. She then worked for two years as a trial preparation assistant in the Special Victims Unit at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York City. After deciding that she definitely did not want to be a lawyer, Luger earned her master’s degree in 2013 at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, with a concentration in broadcast and digital media.
