Are you a slave to Facebook and YouTube?

Political satirist and commentator Alicé Anil breaks down how the whims of the social media behemoths can destroy us.

Can you imagine your reach dwindling to just six people? SIX. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. SIX. There is no way to survive like that as an independent publisher. This happened to Alicé Anil when Facebook changed their algorithm. Did it happen to you, too?

The thing is, we're all slaves at the end of the day, right? To Facebook, to YouTube. The moment that they decide to change their algorithm, we are fucked. End of the day. And this is what has happened with me. It has happened with many other independent publishers. Our business model has been completely jeopardized just because of a single decision that was made.

I used to reach a good number of people and now I remember posting something and I think this was right after they changed it and they were still tweaking it and it said you've reached six people. And I was like you are out of your mind. And you have this moment of panic right, because it's your whole purpose and value and your livelihood is contingent on this and there's very little thought given to publishers and to people that create content that's valuable.

We want to be able to reach people. And they are independent voices, it's not funded by corporations and I think there's a lot of value in that. Especially when our media is ruled and owned by six corporations. The conglomeration that has happened has impacted our political system. I think the media has a very important role to play, independent media. And Facebook fostered that, it was very important in that, so the fact that they've kind of just decided to stick with the friends and family and completely forget about publishers is demoralizing. Which is why I'm thankful to the Maven.

Especially now more than ever, it's incredibly difficult for a small business to gain significant traction on Facebook. Even paid ads aren't as effective as they once were.

Instead of focusing on empowering people to customize and tweak their news feeds, they make these massive, one-size-fits-all changes they have huge repercussions. It's maddening.

So sorry that happened to you too. I always hate hearing how the social media that we've trusted for so long has turned around to bite us
