Baby Slippers – Mary Janes

This free knitting pattern shows you how to knit a pair of Mary Jane slippers for a baby.

What you need

1 20g ball of 4 ply snugly Double knitting wool
Embroidery Thread
2 Small buttons
Size 5 (3.75mm) Needles


Measurements: Newborn-6months

Tension: 13sts to 2 inch (5cm) measures over

Begin with the sole.

Cast on 15sts.

1st Row: INC. in 1 st , K1 INC next st,K. to 2nd last st. Inc in next st, K.1.

2nd Row: K

Repeat last 2 rows 4 more times(25sts)

K.4 rows

Next Row :k.2 tog, K, to last 2 sts. K.2tog

Next Row: K

Repeat last 2 rows 4 times more. (15sts)

This completes the sole. (Do not cast off, continue with the upper section).

Begin Upper:

1st Row: Cast on 9sts for heel. K to last 2 sts. Inc in next st, K1 (25sts)

2nd Row: K
3rd Row: K. to last 2 sts, inc in next st K.1
4th Row: K. (26sts)

Repeat 3rd and 4th rows 3 times more. (29sts)

Next Row: Cast of 16 sts. K to end.
K 11 rows on these 13 sts. For center front.

Next Row: Cast on 9sts, K, to last 2 sts, K.2 Tog.
Next Row: K
Next Row: K to last 2 sts, K.2 Tog
Next Row: K
Repeat last 2 rows 3 times more (25sts)
Cast off

Work a second slipper in the same way.


Cast on 30 sts K 2 rows

Buttonhole row: K2 cast off 1st. K. to end.
Next row: K to cast off st, inc in next st, K to end.
K. 1 row
Cast off.

To make up these knitted Mary Jane slippers:

Fold in half on wrong side and seam cast on and cast off edges together for side of foot. Seam around shaped front, easing in any fullness on the upper seam. Seam heel section in place after joining short center back seam.

Sew strap to center back for several stitches to each side of center. Sew button on strap to match buttonhole. Embroider design on front or trim with ribbon bow.
