Library’s free chess lessons aim to strengthen players

Children who gathered Saturday in Ray Martinez’s classroom at the Brownsville Public Library were there to learn battle strategy.
It marked the fourth month the chess coach has led his free, all-ages class at the Main Branch Library. Martinez teaches attendees rules, terminology and strategy — all with a larger goal in mind.
“The idea is to create a city (chess) club,” he said, and to prepare his students to make it to national competitions.
While Spring Break thinned the number of students normally in the class, Martinez said his first library session drew about 50 students. A class he recently held for homeschool children topped out at 75 attendees.
