Whataburger Employee Refuses Service To Uniformed Cops, Company Responds Along With Police Chief

After his officers were denied service at a Texas Whataburger, Denison Police Chief Jay Burch fired off a response on Facebook

Denison, Texas – An employee at a popular Texas fast-food chain restaurant was fired after she refused to serve two police officers on Saturday, the company Whataburger announced.

Denison Police Chief Jay Burch said the officers were cursed at by the employee and that the restaurant manager’s only response was “I don’t get into politics.”

A Whataburger spokesperson said, “an individual employee acted out of line with Whataburger's values to treat all customers with respect. We took swift action and this person is no longer employed by us."

"We've also reached out to the police sergeant to apologize and plan to speak with the other officers involved to apologize in person and make this right,” the Whataburger statement said.

“Whataburger truly appreciates our law enforcement and their efforts to protect and serve our communities."

We reached out to our Texas officers, who responded that Whataburger has always been very pro-police and they've never experienced anything like this before, and they trust that the company handled it appropriately.

The unidentified female now-former employee had cursed at the two officers and then claimed her boyfriend was “beat up” by the police.

Chief Burch responded in a Facebook post Saturday saying that the woman’s claim was not true and no one was injured in the arrest of her boyfriend.

In addition to firing the problem employee, Whataburger said the manager would receive “retraining," according to the Dallas Morning News.

Chief Burch addressed the situation in a lengthy Facebook post.

“The Denison Police Department enjoys great support from most of our community and our businesses.

"I get it, especially with the anti-police rhetoric from the national media and police-hate groups we see in the country, that many people buy into that rhetoric and dislike police,” the post read.

“Most of those that I have come across in my career that hate cops are very familiar with us because many have a lengthy history of arrests or have friends or family members with such a history.

“If a business does not want police officers as customers, just let us know,” Chief Burch wrote. “There’s no need to curse us and make a scene, just let us know you don’t want us there and we’ll go somewhere else.”

The manager should have been fired right there with the employee. If he cannot support the officers, then the rest of the city should not support Whataburger. This is NOT politics, this a mutual respect issue. If the manager cannot show respect and appreciation for officers, he need not be there.

Manager should be suspended without pay for a few weeks or fired, also.

I don't care what they did. I would never eat there again. You might get the special Exlax sauce the next time.

I wonder what that manager would do if an armed robber came in-called the ex-employee's boyfriend to take care of the situation?

Never hire stinky weaves and you won't have this problem.

An employee refused to serve non-disruptive customers (regardless of who they were). That act alone was loosing Whataburger money. The manager did not have the leadership skills to step up to the plate and handle the situation in the appropriate manner. Both the employee and the manager should have been fired.

I seriously have to question the common sense of these people. The most commonly robbed places are what? Fast food or convenience stores. My daughter works in a convenience store with a deli. The officers who come into their store are GREATLY appreciated and welcomed. A negative remark about law enforcement will get you fired on the spot.Messing with their food, will get you reported for assault on an officer. Any manager of any establishment that serves the public who doesn't support their local law enforcement, is an idiot.

We took swift action and this person is no longer employed by us. Does that include the worthless manager? I hope so.

Wait...they fired her for standing up for her belief and standing on her right to "free speech"? Shouldn't she have the right to serve or refuse service to anyone SHE chooses?? What right does her employer have over her to order her to violate her principles? (Sarcasm intended)!! Oh, that's right, as a representative of their company, recognizing that her actions could cause irreparable hard to the business reputation thus leading to a loss of customers and revenue, the employer DOES have something to say about how their employees act while representing their business. Hmmmm....I wonder if that should apply to those NFL players (and the fall-out actions of others) and if the league itself could (and should) enforce it's own code of conduct?? Oh that's right, it does when it suits it's needs (like refusing to allow the Dallas Cowboys to place a sticker on their helmet to honor five fallen officers). I know we've beaten the topic to death but this just continues to illustrate the double standards of a professional sports organization I choose (yep...my right, too!) to no longer watch these million dollar baby's)! Just my opinion.....

The employee was handled just as she should have been. A manager should understand what their responsibility is every day when they put their manager badge on! The manager should have excused the employee from the register and served the officers. Then the manager should have dealt with the employee per company protocol.
