Saint John, IN – A high school teacher was arrested on Wednesday, after students allegedly caught her using drugs in her classroom, police said.
Samantha Cox, a 24-year-old English teacher, was charged with felony drug possession and misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia, after a student made a recording of Cox’s actions, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.
The video was made by Lake Central High School junior John Rogers at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
“She tried to hide herself,” Rogers told WBBM. “She wasn’t at her desk where we could see her. She was all the way in the corner where she thought we can’t see her.”
"She’s...hiding with a chair and a book and what appears to be cocaine, putting it into lines," he told WGN.
“When I actually watched the footage again and again, and I just realized that my English teacher just did cocaine,” Rogers said.
The video was shared throughout the school, and student witnesses quickly reported its existence to school administrators.
According to WBBM, St. John Police Chief James Kveton said the school alerted his department at 11:30 a.m.
The Dyer Police Department’s narcotics K-9 officer also aided in the investigation.
Authorities have not confirmed exactly what type of substance was recovered at the school, but Chief Kventon told the Northwest Indiana Times that it may have been a mixture of cocaine and heroin, based on “very preliminary information.”
Authorities led Cox out of the school at approximately 1 p.m., WBBM reported.
Chief Kveton said the students showed “a tremendous amount of fortitude and integrity, and enabled staff to address this situation promptly.”
The school superintendent issued a robo call to parents and guardians to inform them about the incident.
Students described Cox as a popular English teacher who was in her second year at Lake Central High, KTLA reported.
Cox is being held in the Lake County Jail.
