Video: Sheriff Advertises Jail As 'Green Roof Inn' With 1-Star Rating

A Florida sheriff named his jail the Green Roof Inn and made a hilarious video to advertise it.

Bunnell, FL – The local sheriff has jokingly he referred to the county lockup as the “Green Roof Inn” for a while, but now it looks like the name will stick as the Flagler County Detention Facility posted three humorous signs that refer to the jail by that name (video below).

A video posted by the Flagler County sheriff showed that at check in, new arrivals encountered a retro motel sign and with VACANCY lit up in neon.

Underneath the sign, a list of the accommodations’ amenities was listed:

■ No Privacy

■ Group Bathrooms & Showers

■ No Meal Selection

■ Free Transportation to Court & State Prison

■ Designer Jewelry - Handcuffs & Leg Irons

■ Free Designer Clothing – Color Coordinated Jumpsuit & Shoes

In the video, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly joked about how comfortable the Green Roof Inn would not be, according to WESH-TV.

“We have a one-star rating,” Sheriff Staly said. “And we are working to lower that as I’m speaking. … No meal selection. You eat what we give you. Or you don’t eat.”

As visitors and inmates left the facility, a sign thanked them for their visit:

“THANK YOU FOR VISITING THE GREEN ROOF INN WHERE THE LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON AND BEDS ARE ALWAYS AVAILABLE. DON’T COME BACK! BUT IF YOU MUST COMMIT ANOTHER CRIME WE HAVE A BED WAITING FOR YOU! ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM – STAY CRIME FREE!”

Sheriff Staly explained that the purpose of the signs was crime prevention on the Flagler County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page.

“It is a warning to potential offenders that the jail is not a 5-star hotel. When you are arrested, we provide the minimum accommodations as required by law. Once an offender ‘checks-in’ they lose their basic freedoms. They don’t decide what to eat, wear, or do with their day,” the sheriff said.

“Hopefully when people see the signs and the list of accommodations offered they will think twice about committing a crime in Flagler County,” Sheriff Staly added.

“I don’t want you to come back. Don’t get arrested by a deputy again. Stay crime free! But if you must commit another crime, know that the light is on and we have a bed waiting for you,” the sheriff said.
