Okaloosa Island - An opossum that broke into Cash's Liquor Store and helped itself to a bottle of bourbon was found on Nov. 24, the morning after Thanksgiving, by an employee who was opening the store.
The employee at the AJ's on the Bayou location discovered the juvenile female opossum next to a broken and empty bottle.
Michelle Pettis, wildlife health technician for the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge, said "A worker there found the opossum up on a shelf next to a cracked open bottle of liquor with nothing in it. Assuming the opossum drank it all, he brought her to us, and we looked over her and she definitely wasn’t fully acting normal," according to Northwest Florida Daily News.
He said the opossum appeared disoriented, was excessively salivating, and appeared to be pale.
The fairly large opossum, who was brought to the Wildlife Refuge by a Fort Walton Beach police officer, was quickly treated by personnel. She was given fluids and care as she sobered up, according to the New York Daily News.
Pettis said, "We loaded her up with fluids to help flush out any alcohol toxins. She was good a couple of days later and was released Thursday night.” She said that the drunken marsupial was a first for her, and did not appear to have a hangover.
Cash Moore, the owner of the liquor store, said that the opossum was 21-years-old as far as he knew.
He said, “She came in from the outside and was up in the rafters, and when she came through she knocked a bottle of liquor off the shelf. When she got down on the floor she drank the whole damn bottle.”
Moore said that it was the first time in his life that an opossum had broken into his store and drank his alcohol, and that it was "pretty unusual."
Not missing a marketing opportunity he said, "But it just goes to show that even the animals are impressed with Cash’s."
