Mother Of Officer Killed In Vegas Shooting Dies Of Broken Heart After Son's Funeral

Mother suffered a heart attack after attending her son's funeral and told chaplain she wanted to be with her slain son

Las Vegas, Nevada - The mother of a Las Vegas police officer killed during the Oct. 1 mass shooting died just days after attending the funeral services for her only son.

Sheryl Stiles was in Las Vegas for the services of her son, Charleston Hartfield, an off-duty Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer who was killed Oct. 1 during the mass shooting on the Strip.

Stiles was riding an escalator at a Las Vegas hotel and suffered a heart attack and fell after the funeral. As a result of the fall, she suffered brain damage and was put on life support, family members said.

“No one expected anything like this to happen,” said Cecil Ralston, Stiles’ cousin, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Ralston said there was a lot of family in town on Sunday so they decided to remove Stiles from life support on that day.

“I was sitting up in the room crying,” said Lewis Stiles, Sheryl Stiles' brother, according to Fox 5 Vegas TV . “We came to bury my nephew and then the next thing we know, I have to bury my sister.”

“My sister was very outgoing,” Lewis Stiles said. “She was a lively person who had a lot of good friends that enjoyed her company.”

Her family said they believe she died from a broken heart.

“I talked to the chaplain of Metro,” Ralston told Fox 5 Vegas. “He told me she kept saying ‘Oh I want to stay, I want to be with Charleston,’ that she wanted to die.”

Hartfield was attending the concert that night and posted a photo of it on his Facebook account. He was one of 58 people killed during the Oct. 1 shooting during the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

Hartfield was a married father with a son and daughter.

Before Officer Hartfield was killed, he wrote a book, ‘Memoirs of a Public Servant‘, which has received positive reviews. Let’s see if we can make it a best-seller and help support his family.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family.

tragedy after tragedy, rest in peace Mom.

How very sad. May they RIP. And prayers for the family.....they must be consumed by grief.

United forever.

This is such a tragedy- this mother loved her son so much it broke her heart when he was killed. I understand how she could love someone. I also regret that it was not newsworthy enough to make the front page of any newspaper or be on the news on any of the local tv stations. His life mattered to us and will always be remembered by us that have been a brother or sister in blue to him.

Seems like all these Las Vegas survivors are dying along with their family members. Just saying.
