Newtown, CT - Years before Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 young school children and six staff members in 2012, he told a man that he had assault weapons and planned to kill students and his mother at the Sandy Hook elementary school, according to FBI documents released this week.
That unidentified man told police of Lanza’s plans in 2008 but the police said there was nothing they could do, the New York Times reported.
The witness, whose name was redacted from the report, told the FBI that he contacted the Newtown Police Department about Lanza’s comments after Lanza told him.
That witness said the Newtown police responded that Lanza’s mother owned the guns and there was nothing they could do.
The FBI documents released contained information from people interviewed who knew Lanza.
“Lanza was working on a list, or spreadsheet, meticulously documenting the details of hundreds of spree killings and mass murders,” FBI agents wrote after their interview with her.
The FBI said Lanza devoted all his time to researching these events.
That woman only met Lanza online and communicated with him about once a month.
The FBI also noted that after Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeast in October of 2012, less than two months before the attack, the family house was left without electricity.
Even though the house had no power, Adam Lanza refused to leave and go to a hotel with his mother, Nancy Lanza. The report said that the mother stayed at the house with her son with no electricity.
The FBI report said the mother “was concerned about him and said that he hadn’t gone anywhere in three months and would only communicate with her by email, though they were living in the same house.”
Do you think that more could have been done to prevent this incident? Police can't arrest somebody before they commit a crime. They can't follow people for years. What do you think could have been done?
We'd like to hear what you think. Please let us know in the comments.
