Estherwood, LA - The Estherwood Assistant Chief Wayne Welsh has resigned from his position after backlash for a grossly inappropriate and racist meme he shared on Facebook.
The meme shows a white cartoon mother holding her daughter's face underwater with the text, "When your daughters first crush is a little negro boy."
After Wayne Welsh posted the meme to his Facebook page on Sunday, there was immediate backlash.
People called city hall and complained. City hall responded that the Mayor and Aldermen have no authority over discipline within the police department, and they directed people to call Chief Ernest J. Villejoin.
Chief Willejoin initially told KATC, "I didn't know anything about it until 10 this morning," Villejoin said. "A woman called from Houston to tell him about it. I apologize for the post. It is too soon to say if there will be any disciplinary action at this time."
Wayne Welsh later responded to people on Facebook saying, "Well, I posted something on Facebook that made a lot of people mad. Well, I'm sorry for what happen. Ya have a blessed day."
He later announced that he would be resigning.
The 2016 census showed that the town's population is under 1,000 people, and it's not clear if there are now any other officers in the town besides the chief.
It's dumbfounding that any law enforcement officer could expect to post an obviously racist meme and think that it's OK. This would be grounds for termination in just about any other department.
The officer's testimony would be tainted by racism in trial involving any any black suspects, making them next to worthless as a patrol officer.
There are a lot of jokes which aren't politically correct and play off of racial stereotypes, and there are a lot of jokes that draw false accusations of racism - this wasn't one of them. The racist message was clear as day and it's almost unbelievable that an officer thought it was OK to post it.
Fair or not, Wayne Welsh's Facebook post is now being used as an example that all police officers are racist.
If a person does not believe that all people are created equal, then they have no business in law enforcement.
