Detroit, MI - Nearly two dozen police officers from two different Detroit Police Department precincts battled each other, instead of the criminals, at a recent drug bust in Andover, one of the city's worst drug neighborhoods.

The incident occurred on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Andover neighborhood on Detroit's East Side.

Two special operations officers from the 12th precinct arrived and set up for a “push off” operation, also known as a reverse sting. The police officers were pretending to be drug dealers as a way to identify potential buyers.

During the 12th precinct’s “push off,” police officers from the 11th precinct arrived, undercover and posing as buyers, with the intent of arresting drug dealers who were making a sale, according to the New York Daily News.

Neither precinct knew about the other precinct’s undercover operation.

During the sting, the 12th precinct officers ordered the 11th precinct officers to the ground. Nearby, more 12th precinct officers arrived and began to raid a drug house.

Officers from both precincts began fighting each other, and the fight became more than physical.

Punches were thrown, and guns were drawn. One officer was taken to a local hospital for what was described as minor injuries, WJBK reported.

The owner of the drug house was present during the melee.

Neighborhood residents were left shaking their heads.

"You have to have more communication. I don’t understand what happened about that – communicate,” one resident said.

Officials from the Detroit Police Department have not released any of the officers' names. They said that they are reviewing the incident as part of their investigation, and are trying to determine what went wrong, and why the officers were fighting each other.

Body-cam footage of the altercation, from at least one officer, was being reviewed as part of the investigation, police said.

Poor leadership & management policies by Department. A standard deconflictiion system is essential to all narcotics investigations. It is Narcotics-101.
