BREAKING: Missouri Police Officer Shot While Transporting Suspect

A Missouri police officer was shot while transporting a suspect.

Arnold, MO - An Arnold police officer has been shot by a suspect he was transporting to the police department for booking.

The officer was shot in the back of the neck and head area while he was inside his police SUV, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Captain Gary Higginbotham.

After being shot, the officer lost control of his black police SUV and crashed into the Arnold Police Department station house, KTVI reported.

The wounded officer’s injuries were described as life-threatening.

It was unclear whether the suspect brought a gun, or grabbed the officer’s service weapon. There is a cage to prevent prisoners in the vehicle from injuring officers.

The suspect, who had been arrested for burglary, was also shot in the head, though it wasn't clear whether the wound was self-inflicted, Capt. Higginbotham said.

Police shut down highways so the officer could be rushed to St. Anthony’s hospital. He was still alive at the time of publication, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Area schools were put on lockdown, but it was lifted after the suspect was taken into custody.
