Chicago, IL - Tatyanna Lewis, age 18, was murdered Friday night, in a brutal attack on Chicago's Far South Side. She has been identified as the daughter of a Chicago police officer.

According to NBC Chicago, the incident occurred about 11:10 PM in the 11400 block of South May Street, which is part of the Morgan Park neighborhood.

Witnesses said that Tatyanna Lewis and the suspect, Chynna Stapleton, age 24, were on the sidewalk in an argument when Stapleton suddenly got into her 2002 Jeep Liberty, and jumped the curb at a high rate of speed.

Stapleton chased Lewis down the sidewalk in her SUV, ran her down, and then crashed into her, pinning her against a tree and ramming into her over and over, according to ABC7Chicago. .

Witnesses said that the suspect's SUV also tore through a front lawn before Lewis was struck. Police said that Stapleton backed up and ran over Lewis at least twice after ramming her into the tree.

Stapleton's child, whose name and age were not released, was also in the SUV during the gruesome attack.

Stapleton fled the scene, crashing into multiple parked vehicles, but was later captured and taken into custody by police. Her SUV was recovered about a mile and a half away, near West 115th and South LaSalle Streets. There was a small child inside the vehicle.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner said that she died from blunt-force injuries, and her death was ruled a homicide.

Brittany Patrick, who lives next door to the location where the attack happened, said: "As soon as I looked out my window I saw a girl being rammed into the tree, and ran over and backed over and over again. She hit my car, backing over the body and then backed back over the body and got away.”

Stapleton was reported to be furious with Lewis, who was in a new relationship with the father of her baby. She went to Lewis to confront her, and an argument began.

Stapleton has been charged with first-degree murder.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said, "Just senseless violence in this city. We shouldn't have it, but we do. My thoughts and prayers go out to that officer and his family because no one should have to go through something like that."

He also said "It's really hard because, you know, in the last couple of weeks we had three police officers shot trying to keep this city safe, so violence happens. It can happen to anybody at any time. It can touch anybody. That's why it's so important for us as a city to come together to tap it down."

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tatyanna Lewis's father and family.
