Yancey County, SC - The Yancey County Sheriff's Office announced on Wednesday that somebody shot and killed K9 Chris while he was in his kennel at home.
K9 Chris was shot Thursday night or Wednesday morning in his kennel in the Bald Mountain community, according to the Sheriff's Office. He died from his injuries Wednesday morning.
The K9 was with the Sheriff's Office for the past 7 years, and was scheduled to retire at the end of the year.
The Yancey County Humane Society said, “Our hearts are broken and our anger at this injustice and cruelty is over-boiling. The shelter joins with our Sheriff's Department in giving the Wilson family our love. We loved K-9 Chris. We condemn with all our hearts this senseless act and ask that anyone who knows or hears anything, please call the Sheriff's Department.”
There are currently no suspects, but the Yancey County Sheriff's Office is offering a $2,800 reward for information leading to the killer.
The Sheriff's Office is also accepting donations to increase the reward money. If you wish contribute to the reward money or to the K-9 program, checks may be mailed to PO Box 6, Burnsville, NC 28714 attention Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard. Please make checks out to the Yancey County Sheriff's Office.
The department says, "The reward will run for one year. If you choose to donate, please indicate if you wish for your money to be returned or donated to the K9 program in the event an arrest has not been made within the year."
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 20th at 2:00 PM in the auditorium of Mountain Heritage High School.
