Hero Down: York City PD Officer Alex Sable Dies During Training Exercise

York City Police Officer Alex Sable died during a training exercise on May 6.

York, PA – York City Police Officer Alex Sable passed away on May 9, after he suffered a heart attack in the line of duty.

Officer Sable, 37, was preparing to join the York County Quick Response Team, and was attending a training in Dundalk, Maryland on May 6, the York Daily Record reported.

He was participating in a SWAT tactical water rescue training exercise in a pool with 12 other individuals, and went into cardiac arrest as he began to climb out of the water.

SWAT and fire department medics immediately delivered treatment on-site, the York Daily Record reported.

Officer Sable, a four-year veteran of the department, was rushed to a local hospital, where he remained in intensive care until his death.

“The City of York is deeply saddened by this loss, as Officer Sable was a respected member of the York City Police Department and a friend to all,” the York City Police Department said in a Facebook post. “He will be sincerely missed.”

The married father of three served eight years as a U.S. Marine, including two tours in Iraq, according to a fundraising page established to assist his family.

“He was a loving supporting husband, devoted father, loving son and brother,” the page read. “He will be deeply missed and [is] greatly loved.”

On May 10, approximately 80 police officers traveling to Washington, D.C. for the Police Unity tour made a detour into York to honor Officer Sable’s memory, the York Daily Record reported.

“Sometimes the little things mean a lot and we appreciate them and we wish them a safe ride to D.C.,” the York City PD said of the officers’ visit.

On the same date, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf ordered that the Commonwealth flag in York be flown at half-staff in the fallen officer’s honor, according to a Facebook post.

“Frances and I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Officer Sable’s family and colleagues, and all of our neighbors in York,” the governor wrote. “We will be forever grateful for Alex’s service.”

Officer Sable’s funeral service will be held in private, but a public memorial has been planned for Friday, according to the York City Police Department.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of York City Police Officer Alex Sable, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
