The incident occurred about 6 AM as Agent Lorenzo-Gonazlez and Hector Matias-Torres were each attempting to return to the police department on PR-115, after a 24-hour shift, according to ODMP.
Their cruisers became trapped in the floodwaters, and both were washed into the Culebrinas River.
Police recovered Agent Lorenzo-Gonzalez' body the next day, as well as that of Puerto Rico Police Agent Hector Matias-Torres.
Agent Lorenzo-Gonzalez was a 21-year veteran of the Puerto Rico Police Department. Agent Matias-Torres was a 22-year veteran of the Puerto Rico Police Department.
President Trump said that Puerto Rico was "hit as hard as you can hit" by the hurricane, and that he would be visiting the US territory.
Millions of people have been cut off from power and outside communication since Hurricane Maria hit last week, destroying buildings and causing a dam failure.
The President tweeted Monday saying that, "Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble. It's old electrical grid, which was in terrible shape, was devastated. Much of the Island was destroyed, with billions of dollars owed to Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with. Food, water and medical are top priorities - and doing well. #FEMA."
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Puerto Rico Police Agent Angel Lorenzo-Gonzalez and Agent Hector Matias-Torres. Rest easy, heroes. We'll hold the line from here.
