Hero Down: New Orleans Officer Marcus McNeil Murdered In Ambush

New Orleans Police Department Officer Marcus McNeil was ambushed and murdered early Friday morning.

New Orleans, LA – New Orleans Police Department Officer Marcus McNeil was ambushed and murdered early Friday morning.

The incident happened just after midnight when a group of officers on patrol spotted something suspicious.

Officer McNeil stepped out of his car to investigate and a gunman opened fire, shooting the officer repeatedly.

Other officers returned fire, shooting the suspect, who then ran into an apartment.

The gunman remained barricaded in the apartment until he eventually surrendered to a SWAT team.

Officer McNeil was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

New York Daily News reports that relatives of the gunman identified him as Darren Bridges. Bridges has a long arrest record including arrests for theft, domestic abuse involving strangulation, and possession of drugs.

Bridges was transported to the hospital where he’s being treated for his bullet-holes.

The motive for the shooting is still not known.

"Just routine patrol. He was doing his job, doing exactly what the citizens expect him to do," Superintendent Michael Harrison said.

"These are the worst kind of days for the city," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. "We want to keep the family in our thoughts and prayers. There were a lot of officers who knew this officer very well. The entire department is in trauma."

"This hurts," Supt. Harrison said, "I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts."

Officer McNeil was a three-year veteran of the department.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer McNeil. Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.

Officer Marcus McNeil, your life mattered.

I would like to see/hear the same folks who demonstrate, parade, riot when a police "May" have hurt/killed someone - unjustified - without actually having any idea what the facts are! The cops are after outlaws who have made wrong choices, they have no way of knowing when they get involved in a situation with a suspect if armed force will be necessary. Police officers, for the most part, have made the right choices, have not broken the law, have done their job to the best of their abilities and yet even some who do know better, but want to cater to a certain population, act like they are MORE LIKELY to be guilty than any perp in an altercation!!! Where are they when this young police officer is gunned down - "shot several time?" Some city official actually just was quoted as saying that the several police officers who were assassinated in Texas should not be honored, they brought the slaughter on themselves. If it keeps going like this from "authority" we won't have ANY law enforcement that can be trusted - who would want to have a choice of dying, allowing some innocent to die or completely ruin their own careers/lives by using lethal force to stop it?! With no law enforcement, we sink into vigilantism!

This is so sad, goddpeed.

@spike1 If it keeps up, we won't have anyone willing to be police officers at at ALL eventually. Then it will be the wild west all over again with much much more deadly weapons.

My condolences and prayers are with the family of Officer McNeil at this time of heartbreak in their lives. Remember if you can that he was a hero that put the lives and safety of his community above his own, and took his oath willingly to protect them. You should be proud to call him a son, brother, husband, or daddy. RIP, Sir, your life mattered!

My prayers are with the family! You life mattered and some thug took it! I hope justice is served on his killer. An eye for an eye! RIP OFFICER MCNEIL!

Such a senseless tragedy. This has got to stop. I feel every cop killer should be executed. My heart goes out to both Officer McNeil's home family and work family. May you all find peace. Thank you Officer McNeil for your service.

@snarkycop...that’s good. I just tired of his silly comments. Glad it was deleted!
