Hero Down: Mineral County Deputy Jeremy Franks Found Dead At Home

Deputy Franks was found dead in his home of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Keyser, WV – Mineral County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Franks, 32, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Jan. 22.

The father of two was found alone at his home just after 7 p.m., the Cumberland Times-News reported.

"It is with great sadness that we regret to inform everyone of the death of Deputy Franks," Mineral County Sheriff Jeremy Taylor said on Jan. 23.

The “homegrown” deputy was a star athlete and 2004 graduate of Keyser High School – the same jurisdiction where he would later serve, the Mineral Daily News-Tribune reported.

He Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania on an academic scholarship, and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He also participated in football and track during his college career, according to his obituary.

Deputy Franks later served as a correctional officer, prisoner transporter and prison riot squad member at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in Augusta, West Virginia.

He subsequently attended the West Virginia Police Academy, and was hired by the MCSO in 2014.

The deputy said that his two young children, Aubrey and Zylar, “were the best things that ever happened to him,” his obituary read.

Following Deputy Franks’ death, Mineral County citizens and business owners began displaying blue and black drapes and the fallen deputy’s badge number throughout the county as a sign of solidarity, the Mineral Daily News-Tribune reported.

“They put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. I think it is time that we are there for them,” resident Jennifer Simpson said. “I think this is an amazing way to show support and tribute for an amazing officer, a wonderful father and son.”

A black drape was also placed over the Mineral County Courthouse’s main entrance on Tuesday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mineral County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Franks, both blood and blue. Godspeed, sir, we will take the watch from here. Thank you for your service.

Pray for this family. It is refreshing to see this department acknowledging him and still listing him as an officer down. Too often are these events swept under the rug and hidden. The stigma of asking for help and the punishment for asking for help has to be dealt with. God bless this family and this brother in blue.

Condolences to family and department. Rest in Peace Brother...

It is so sad to see one of our local heroes pass. It is even harder to know that they have passed because of the demons of what they witness daily has penetrated and has caused the death of that hero. RIP Deputy Franks

I want all anti-police take a look at all fallen heroes especially young ones like this sweet man And Pray for the families, blood and blue For everyone with a heart, tell every uniformed man or woman that they are appreciated, you are thankful and most of all they are never alone, that they do have people that care

Rest in Peace dear Brother. You had an amazing life and your next one will without a doubt be even more special. You will always be remembered. Thank you for you service...

RIP, Deputy Franks. May both your blood and blue families find comfort and peace in the dark days ahead.

Rest in peace dear one. Praying that God will comfort and protect your family, and open wide the entrance to Heaven for you.

Thank you for your service Officer. You see the absolute worst society has and the horrors people inflict on others. It's ok sir you are at peace now. You will be missed sir. May God hold you tight and watch over your family.

While I appreciate your thoughts about those that are anti-police, you realize that they don't really give a damn! People like that are glad to see dead officers for any reason. It is people like the rest of us that matter. We respect and honor the men and women who wear the badge. It is sad that when one falls for whatever reason, there is a faction of people out there that celebrate their deaths.

It's funny how many people are anti-police, yet when the crap hits the fan, they police are the first people that they call for!
